Whether the participants include your executive team, board or medical staff leadership; whether it’s for a special problem solving session, strategic planning team building or educational development, a retreat is a vital tool for making progress, for “taking a step forward” on the important issues affecting your organization.

RETREAT PREPARATION

To reap value from your investment of time and expense, there are several ingredients necessary for a successful retreat. A successful retreat balances substance and social time. It’s engaging, stimulating, and inspiring. Participants should be clear about the goals for the event beforehand and what was accomplished afterwards. The retreat’s purpose should link to larger organizational goals. It should be skillfully run. And it should include a measure of fun.

HCNA has extensive experience in retreat planning and facilitation. We can help you set the stage and orchestrate the process to create a meaningful and productive retreat. Importantly, we can also help you translate the success of the retreat into ongoing benefits to your organization.

THE HCNA PROCESS

HCNA has developed a widely acclaimed process for framing and facilitating a retreat for your health care organization. We call it “The Walk in the Woods,” it’s a step-by-step process for moving forward.

This four-step interest-based negotiation process systematically transports participants from “self interests,” to the mind opening “enlarged interests”, toward the creative “enlightened interests”, and finally to the solution generating “aligned interests”. This model is designed to ensure that for all involved, going through the steps of the “Walk in the Woods” is a means for participants to take a “step forward” in better meeting the objectives of your organization.

Combine this process with learning about collaborative problem solving and interest-based negotiation. Add several engaging simulation exercises. Top it all off with a healthy dose of humor. Put it all together and you have the ingredients for your successful retreat.

HCNA has broad experience in facilitating retreats for a range of health care organizations. We can help you put together the essential elements, whether you are seeking a facilitator to lead your organization through its next retreat or a keynote speaker to lead off your meeting.

THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT TYPES OF RETREATS, EACH WITH DIFFERENT PURPOSES:

  • Leadership development retreat
Your leaders will learn an original and time proven process for conflict resolution, negotiation, and collaborative problem solving, so they can “take a step forward” together.

  • Decision-making retreat
If your organization needs assistance in bringing together key parties to reach an important strategic decision, we can efficiently and effectively facilitate your retreat to enable you to organizationally take a step forward.

  • Building effective collaborative relationships
If your organization is facing a significant obstacle or a conflict in moving forward, you may bring together members of the board, medical staff leadership, and executive management in a productive setting providing an educational and entertaining facilitator or speaker on a topic of mutual interest.

  • Resolving a complex and perplexing problem
Bring together the key parties that need to participate in creating a workable solution and the buy-in to make it work.

  • Medical staff education and development
HCNA has speakers to provide focused education for the members of your medical staff and its leadership. Help them fulfill their medical staff responsibilities by providing educational and engaging speakers on topics important to them.

PUTTING TOGETHER YOUR RETREAT PLAN:

We will work together with you to design a retreat based on the audience involved and their distinct purposes for participating in the meeting. For example, a retreat with a relatively homogenous group and specific focus is very different from one that brings together people with distinct responsibilities, interests, and backgrounds. HCNA works with you to customize the retreat plan to the unique circumstances, timeframe, and goals of those participating in the event.
